Detroit’s first and only 100% gluten-free and sustainably-sourced sushi menu

Welcome to Sushi Lounge Detroit, the Motor City’s home for 100% gluten-free sushi crafted with precision and personality.

Nestled on the upper level of the Detroit Shipping Company food hall, we’re just steps away from our sister restaurant, Bangkok 96 Street Food. This is sushi with soul: chef-driven, sustainably sourced, and packed with flavor.

Our Story

From Chef Genevieve Vang of Bangkok 96 and Bangkok 96 Street Food

If you know Chef Genevieve Vang, you know she doesn’t do anything halfway. From fleeing Laos at age six, to learning culinary arts in France, to opening Bangkok 96 (Wayne County’s first Thai restaurant), to becoming a James Beard semifinalist, her journey has been defined by heart, hustle, and big flavors. After training with strict Chinese chefs and studying American barbecue in St. Louis, “Mama G” eventually landed in San Francisco to master sushi. There, she fell in love with the ritual, the care, the art… and maybe also the challenge of proving wrong the men who once told her, “Women’s hands are too hot for sushi.”

Her response? Sushi Lounge Detroit. Meeting the need for casual yet high-quality sushi in Detroit, Mama G brings Sushi Lounge to life with Detroit tenacity and technique that speaks for itself.

Why Gluten-Free?

Gluten-free isn’t a trend here. It’s a promise. After years of managing celiac disease and creating gluten-free recipes for her other restaurants, Mama G knew Detroit deserved sushi that didn’t force anyone to compromis or feel excluded. Sushi rice vinegar, soy sauce, imitation crab, and tempura almost always contain gluten. At Sushi Lounge, accessibility is the name of the game. We are a scratch kitchen that uses premium ingredients and house-made sauces, including our own gluten-free eel sauce and our Thai Feast Tempura batter.

Why Sustainable Sourcing?

Great sushi starts long before the rice hits the bowl. It starts in the ocean. That’s why we source pristine, responsibly harvested fish caught with care, handled with respect, and chosen for both quality and sustainability. It costs more, but feeding our community and supporting our ecosystem both matter greatly.

Because if we’re going to do sushi in Detroit, we’re going to do it right.
